Daytrip - Cold Creek

On 05/02/2020 Jim Herring and I decided to visit Cold Spring for a little four wheeling and a picnic. Willow Peak towers behind the mountain village of Cold Creek. We started out by taking Cold Creek Road, then parts of Wheeler Pass Road and eventually Willow Springs Road, driving deeper into the wilderness. Daytrip - Cottonwood Cove Looking for Wildflowers

On 04/01/2020 Bob Croke and I went searching for wildflowers. Due to the coronavirus, access to the Cottonwood Cove inside the Lake Mead National Recreation Area was closed and we were turned around at the LMNRA check point. Even though we couldn't drive to the lake, there were some wildflowers along the sides of the road. Though it was just a little early in the season, the Beavertail Pricklypear (Opuntia basilaris)  cactus were just beginning to bloom. Overall, we weren't overly excited by the display of wildflowers we found. Better than last year, but not as good as some previous years. Daytrip - Snow Pictures in Mt. Charleston Area

On 03/13 Jim Herring and I took an impromptu drive up to Mount Charleston and Lee Canyon. We didn't even have our cameras; all these pictures were taken with my phone. As it was overcast it wasn't a great day for taking pictures. However they give you an idea what it is like up in the mountains after a night of snow. The temperature was just above freezing and the snow on the trees was melting and beginning to fall off the trees. Just 30 miles from the Las Vegas Strip and the valley, it gives you a glimpse of what the mountains surrounding Las Vegas can be like. Daytrip - Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort

On 02/24/2020 Jim Herring and I decided to take a ride up to the Las Vegas and Snowboard Resort. Though it doesn't look it, Lee Canyon has had over 120 inches of snow this year. The new multimillion dollar two-story, 10,000-square-foot hillside property, located near the resort’s main lodge, features a heated terrace, patio dining space, bistro, expanded restroom facilities and a ski-in, ski-out bar. We spent over an hour watching people ski up and down the resort. Eventually we began to freeze and headed back to the car and headed home. Check it out here ... Las Vegas-Ski and Snowboard Resort.

Daytrip - Horsethief Canyon and Fortification Road

On 29 January Jim Herring, Bob Croke and Ron Ziance drove to Horsethief Canyon and Fortification Road in Arizona. For pictures and descriptions of these two areas click the following links.
