DayTrip Hikes




General: First of all, let me say that there are literally dozens of very good books and websites on "hikes" and or "hiking" in and around the Las Vegas area. In spite of this, I decided to add to the fray by publishing two books of my own during 2014. One on hikes in and around Las Vegas [DIAL - Daytripping In & Around LasVegas] and another on petroglyph sites in Clark County [Nevada Rock Art]. Clicking the "References" tab above will take you to a page with some of my favorite reference books and Internet sites ... References.   When it came to categorizing the trip pages for this site, I felt that mere term "hiking" was too restrictive. Wanting a category that was more inclusive, I chose the term DayTrip Hikes. In addition to locations that provide only hiking activities, this category is now able to include a much broader spectrum of activities and locations available to the millions of visitors that visit the Las Vegas area every year. Combining a DayTrip Hike with a night of dining and gambling can not only make a vacation visit more enjoyable and rewarding - it may even save you money in the long run. For the purposes of this site, a RoadTrip Hike is defined as a trip that can be accomplished in a single day. Using a car or similar mode of public transportation, a DayTrip Hike is a visit to any locale, destination or attraction that can be completed with a round trip from one’s point of origin in a single day. For the purpose of maintaining consistency in providing directions, mileage and other location information, I use the Stratosphere Tower on the Las Vegas Strip as a common “Point of Origin”.

Primary Activities: Each location must be a well known or publicly recognized destination or attraction such as a national or state park, historic site, building, trailhead, conservation area, wildlife refuge or off-road pull-off with vehicle accessibility and be recognized for at least one of the following Primary activities:
    • Hiking - A form of walking, undertaken with the specific purpose of exploring and enjoying the scenery. It usually takes place on trails in rural or wilderness areas.
    • Hiking/Rock-hounding - The recreational collecting of rocks and/or mineral specimens from their natural environment.
    • Hiking/Birding - The observing and identifying of wild birds and fowl in their natural habitats.
    • Hiking/Photographing - Site-seeing that involves the taking of pictures of natural elements such as landscapes, wildlife, plants, and close-ups of textures as well as man-made structures in their natural environment.
Daytrip Hiking Categories: For searching and locating DayTrip Hikes that may meet your personal interests and available time constraints, I have created three categories of Indices.

The first, SECTION ONE below, contains trips & hikes that list DayTrip Hikes that are grouped by location. Because there are only roughly 10 roads that lead away from the city of Las Vegas proper, I created a "tab" at the top of each page. Click the tab to go to the page with these locations and pictures ... Pics by Location. Section One below is copied from the tab page, "Pics by Locations".

The second, SECTION TWO below, lists links to all Daytrip Hikes alphabetically. Following the link for each location title I have further indicated what I consider to be the primary activities for each trip.

The third, SECTION THREE below, is a listing of RoadTrips (overnight trips) that are listed alphabetically by state. They also indicate the year the pictures were taken and the last time the page was updated. An accompanying slideshow is indicated by [SS].

      RoadTrips Listed Alphabetically
      This section lists postings that contain travelogue-like narratives of RoadTrips with pictures and slideshows taken over the past 13 years. Some are presented using a multiple picture format, others use multiple page PDF collages. In December of 2009 I publishing a book titled, "Our Retirement Journey - A Travelogue", that I made as a Christmas gift for close friends and family members. The book can be purchased on Lulu.com. After I started hiking in late 2010 and gathering more pictures, I decided to create this site, "Ken's Photo Gallery", to showcase my hikes, trips and photos. The goal is to eventually convert each of the RoadTrip "PDF" postings below into regular day-trip page with detailed trip locations and descriptions, full-sized pictures and accompanying Slideshows. As of now I have only completed about half of these conversions.

      RoadTrip Categories: For the purpose of providing an index, I have attempted to organize each roadtrip first by state, then by Classification Type, then alphabetically by the page title. This is followed by the year the pictures were taken and the last time the page was updated. Lastly it lists the classification and whether there is an accompanying slideshow [SS].
