| 11/27/2012 Trip Notes: Harvey Smith and I took a trip to the Sandy Valley area to do a little four-wheeling in search of the Argentina Mine. After driving about 1-1/2 miles, and hiking another quarter of a mile, we finally located the Argentina Mine site. After exploring the mine site, we continued driving along Table Mountain Road until we reached the top of the mountain, located in the lower left corner of the map in (Fig. 02). About half way up the road towards the summit, we passed what appeared to be a rather large radio tower (Figs. 03-05). At the summit, there was a triangulation station disk - Benchmark (FS1223) N 35 degrees 48.327 W 115 degrees 29.173 (NAD 83) Altitude 5155 - (Figs. 06 & 07) that dated to 1926. From the top you get views (Fig. 01) looking west towards the lakebeds of Sandy Valley. Figure (08) is a ‘zoomed in” shot with the town of Sandy Valley in the distant center. The view in (Fig. 09) below was taken from the same spot looking northeast towards the the lakebeds near Goodsprings and Jean. On a section of the road that headed east and then south, bottom right corner of (Fig. 02), we found several rocks that appeared to have imbedded petrified or fossilized formations (Figs. 10, 11 & 12). You be the judge. My final find was two pieces of rock (Fig. 13 & 14) that contained fossilized seabed specimens. |
