Directions: From town, drive out to Hoover Dam, then continue south on Hwy 93 for 4 miles to White Rock Canyon Trailhead. This is also the trailhead for Horsethief  Canyon Road. Drive about 5 miles to the campground at the end of the road.

Description of AreaHorsethief Canyon Campground is a primitive, backcountry campground off Highway 93 in Lake Mead National Recreation Area south of the dam in Arizona. At the end of the road and the primitive campground there is a sign (Fig. 02) about five miles out. There are no amenities other than a flat, sandy place to park and pitch tents and a few campfire rings, but it is quiet and far from the incessant drone of RV generators.

01/29/2020 Trip Notes: This short dirt road doesn't offer much much but the solitude and surroundings. Once you get to the end of the road there is a huge spillover (Fig. 01) blocking the road. Though is appears quite slippery, it looks like it could be possible for one to climb up the spill-over (Fig. 03). As we studied it we agreed that 3-4 years ago when we were all in better physical shape we might have attempted it, but not today. The area directly in front of the spillover is the campground (Fig. 02). After looking around the area, and the views back to where we had come up (Figs. 04 & 05), Jim and Bob got the crazy idea to climb the rocky hillside to the top of the opening. Ron and I sat in the car and watched them (Figs. 06, 07 & 08). If you click on each of the pictures and look carefully, you can pick out Jim and Bob on the hillside. The wind was so strong it was almost enough to blow one over just standing still. At the top they still couldn't get a good picture of the spillover. Here is the picture they had of looking down at the area where they started from (Fig. 09). When they got back down, we started the drive back to the trailhead of the road at White Rock Canyon parking lot. It wasn't until we started driving back that we realized how much we had climbed up on the way to the end of the road. The elevation at the spillover at the end of the road is 2,824 feet, a climb of 1,280 feet from the parking lot at the trailhead of the road. To add to the day on the way home we drove up Kingwash Road to Fortification Road. Check if out here ... Kingman Wash Road & Mine.
