11/15/2012 Trip Notes: Even though this was my fourth trip to this area, this is the first time I hiked the lower end of the wash, and what a great surprise! Linda Groft, our trip leader and I both began hiking down the wash. Unfortunately, Linda turned around and headed back about a half mile before the most beautiful part of the hike. The view of the wash in (Fig. 01) is looking west from the top of Anniversary Mine road where the van parked, just before it makes its decent down into the wash.  We found some extremely interesting geologic rock formations (Figs. 03 thru 07) all along this hike. Notice how the rock face in (Fig. 05) is fractured in almost perfect "squares", and through erosion, is braking off in square pieces. Three-quarters of the way down this section of the wash I was rewarded with an “explosion” of color as seen in (Figs. 08 – 10). Figure 10 shows where a secondary wash spills into the Lovell Wash. Hiking only a short distance up this wash I encountered a small, 30-odd foot deep mine shaft (Figs. 11 & 12). Though there were few signs of vegetation in the main wash, I did encounter some in this secondary wash (Figs. 13 thru 16). The silver gray plant shown in (Figs. 14 & 16) is a California Bearpoppy. Learn more about this endangered plant here ... California Bearpoppy. When I finally reached the end, where the wash goes under Northshore Road (Fig. 17), I had to climb up out of the wash and hike back to Mile Marker 16 and wait for the van. Near where I exited the wash I encountered this little area of erosion (Fig. 18). Could this be the start of another “Grand Canyon”?
